Registration
Deadline: 1 September 2025
Regular 70 € — Reduced 50 €

* All participants have to be ESEM members in good standing and therefore they need to pay their conference fee as well as their ESEM Membership. Please check the ESEM website for Membership.

** It has always been part of the ESEM ethos to encourage the participation of scholars from across Europe and beyond, especially those who cannot afford to attend other international conferences. For this reason, ESEM and local seminar organizers prioritize low membership and conference fees. In addition, we have limited resources available to support presenters who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial constraints.

If you need support to attend this year’s seminar and are not able to access sufficient sponsorship from other sources, we invite you to send an email to ssardo@ua.pt outlining your case for support (max 300 words) no later than 31st July 2025. Your case for support should include details of other possible sources of support and of other conferences which you have attended or plan to attend in 2025.

(Your data and information will only be shared among conference chairs and the ESEM coordinating committee for assessment purposes and will be destroyed after decisions are communicated).

Transport and Accommodation

The nearest airport is Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO) in Porto.

From Porto to Aveiro you have 3 options:

1) Direct Bus from the Oporto Airport to Aveiro. FlixBus have regular connections, and the total time is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

2) There is a direct subway (metro) connection from the airport to Campanhã train station (in Porto), from where Alfa e Intercidades trains to Lisbon depart hourly; most of these trains stop at Aveiro train station. If you arrive in Abeiro by train, there are bus connections from the station to the University, and taxis or Uber are inexpensive: you might, therefore, find it more convenient to take a taxi to the University campus. Not all taxi drivers are familiar with the location of the individual departments: it might be easier to print the map of the campus and indicate the place where they should drop you off. Please refer to the Campus Map (attached).

3) If you are driving to Aveiro, driving southward on A1, exit at "Aveiro (A25)". On A25 there are two exits to the city: "Aveiro Norte" (North exit) and, a few miles ahead, "Aveiro". If you're heading for the University of Aveiro, the latter is advisable. After leaving A25 and arriving to the first roundabout, follow the direction “Universidade de Aveiro” and then turn right at the traffic lights. You will find yourself in Rua da Pêga, located between the university and the Ria de Aveiro.

IF you are driving from Lisbon to Aveiro, driving northward on A1, exit at Aveiro-Sul/Águeda (exit 15) and then drive along EN235 until you reach the university campus.

Miguel A. García

John Blacking Memorial Lecture

Miguel Ángel García is an eminent scholar whose extensive trajectory in ethnomusicology, anthropology, and sound studies makes him a highly deserving invitee for the 2025 John Blacking Memorial Lecture at the 40th European Seminar in Ethnomusicology. A Principal Investigator at Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and Professor Consulto at the University of Buenos Aires, García has conducted pioneering research on Indigenous musical practices, the cultural politics of sound archives, and the epistemology of listening. His doctoral work on the soundscapes of Wichí society laid the foundation for a career devoted to understanding music not only as a cultural expression but also as a dynamic field of ontological and political negotiation. He has also conducted extensive research on the relationships between music, myth, and religion, as well as the aural forms of perception among the Pilagá groups settled in the Argentine Chaco.

García has significantly shaped the global discourse on sound archives and their role in ethnomusicology. He is co-chair of the ICTMD Study Group on Sources and Archives for Music and Sound Studies, founder and director of the academic journal El oído pensante, and international consultant for innovative projects such as Liber|Sound (Portugal) and De-Linking Sounds (Germany). His editorial and curatorial work reflects a deep engagement with decolonial perspectives and the ethics of sonic representation, themes that resonate deeply with the legacy of John Blacking. García’s prolific authorship – spanning books, peer-reviewed articles, and audiovisual productions –demonstrates a sustained interrogation of the intersections between sonic practices, technologies, and ideologies.

Furthermore, García’s unwavering dedication to collaborative, cross-disciplinary dialogue was reflected in his active participation in international conferences, his guest lectures at leading institutions, and his visionary leadership in transnational research initiatives. As a fellow of the Humboldt Foundation, he undertook research stays at the Berlin Phonogram Archive and the Ibero-American Institute, among other esteemed German institutions. These experiences contributed to pioneering efforts in the modern edition and preservation of early 20th-century wax cylinder recordings from Latin America, leaving a legacy in the field of historical sound archives.

His reflections on the digital transformation of sound, listening as a social practice, and the political dimensions of musical knowledge place him at the forefront of contemporary ethnomusicological thought. Inviting Miguel A. García to deliver the John Blacking Memorial Lecture not only honours his profound scholarly contributions but also enriches the 40th European Seminar in Ethnomusicology with a critical and innovative voice.
